South Essex College of Further & Higher Education purchased Careers Explorer in 2014 to provide careers advice and to help their marketing efforts across its three main campuses in Basildon, Southend and Thurrock. We have talked to Michael Bennett, Head of Marketing and Communications, about how they have been using Careers Explorer so far and about his thoughts on the product.
What persuaded you to purchase Careers Explorer?
Employability is the single biggest issue for College marketers in 2015. It is absolutely imperative that young people are making informed decisions about their course based on the latest labour market data. Parents are rightly very concerned that the course their son or daughter is enrolling on has employment prospects now and in the future.
How are you currently using Careers Explorer?
Careers Explorer is embedded on each of our course pages on the College website, allowing young people and parents to search for relevant careers and make the right choice for them. We have also used the data in our offline marketing such as the FE prospectus, and showcase careers via social media.
Michael has shared with us an example of how Careers Explorer is embedded on the South Essex College website (see the screenshot below). South Essex College has customised Careers Explorer to show relevant courses offered on their campuses for the different occupations. When the user searches Careers Explorer, they can discover possible career paths and future prospects.
What have you used before?
We used to have links to the National Careers Service, but Careers Explorer is far superior.
What features do you like the most?
Young people like to see the potential salaries they will be earning, and if there are likely to be more jobs in that area in the future.
Who is using Careers Explorer?
Young people at school, their parents and key stakeholders like careers advisers.
Have you got any feedback from students, teachers or parents?
Careers Explorer is proving very popular with young people – they are more likely to convert to an application if they have used the website.
What do you like the most?
The simple search has allowed us to link each course to a relevant list of careers.
Are you satisfied with the support we provide for implementation and training?
The support from the Careers Explorer team has been excellent – they are always available to talk to and are happy to listen to suggestions.
Is there anything you would like to add?
Careers Explorer, alongside the Labour Insight tool from Burning Glass, means that our curriculum offer is designed using the latest labour market statistics, and our young people are choosing courses not just based on what subjects they are interested in, but what the career prospects are today and in the future.
Thank you very much for your time.
