The Hop Gallery is delighted to be sponsoring this exhibition of work from the 6th Form Visual Arts Department of Sussex Downs College (Lewes Campus).
The Hop Gallery team realised that the students within the Visual Arts Department were producing some outstanding pieces of art. Since the closure of the local authority funded Thebes Gallery these talented students found themselves with nowhere to exhibit their art in a professional setting. The team at Hop Gallery decided to offer the gallery space for a one week exhibition to the Lewes Campus of Sussex Downs College, so that a selection of students could showcase their work in a professionally run gallery. Apart from the tutors’ and students’ voted choice of art, the selected pieces which will be on display were chosen by exhibition curator Diana Hitchin and gallery display advisor Barbara Walters.
The Hop Gallery is sponsoring two prizes in recognition of what the students have achieved. One prize will be awarded to the Tutors’ choice of student who has made most progress during the last academic year (not exam based) and the second prize is for students (including visiting induction students) to vote on their favourite piece in the College’s “Lavish” show. We are very pleased that Anthony Penrose from the Farley’s Barn Educational Trust, which also encourages young artists, has agreed to present these prizes to the students on the exhibition opening day. The College and Hop Gallery are really pleased to have been involved in this collaboration which showcases and celebrates the development of the students’ visual language, creative and technical skills.
