Petroc College of Further and Higher Education is one of the South West’s leading colleges with main campuses in Barnstaple and Tiverton. Since Petroc purchased Careers Explorer in December 2014, the system has proved very popular with its students – with over 1500 searches in the past five months.
We talked with Jackie Carlton, Careers Adviser at the College’s Job shop. In her role, Jackie is responsible for employer engagement as well as providing careers advice to the students, mostly those enrolled in foundation degrees, vocational courses or A-levels.
Petroc has opted for embedding Careers Explorer on its website and it can be accessed by current students once they log in. Petroc has promoted the tool in their tutor bulletin and on a plasma screen at the college. They use mostly the labour market information feed, followed by job search and apprenticeship feed.
“We see that students mostly use Careers Explorer on their own. The labour market information is very easy to read. They can show the results to their parents or guardians, or discuss it with their teachers,” Jackie said. “When a student comes to Job Shop for an advice, I usually show him or her Careers Explorer, as I think it can complement the face to face advice.”
In addition to Careers Explorer, Jackie uses information from National Careers Services, Prospects, Guardian alerts and quarterly graduate information issued by the Office for National Statistics. She also liaises with local employers to discuss various job offers.
