New Hairdressing Training mobile App for Further Education

The existing portfolio of pioneering hairdressing and barbering training videos, from the award winning service Hairdressing Training, are now presented and accessible via an easy to use mobile app.

The app is the simplest way to access over 60 educational hairdressing training and barbering video tutorials - mapped to the NVQ curriculum.

The videos have been created by those who teach NVQ/SVQ Levels 1-3 in further education in the UK, ensuring accuracy for learning and teaching. Whether you are a teacher, student, trainer, or just interested in developing skills, this valuable tool will help you learn at your convenience.

Download the app to access the video tutorials, save them to a playlist and even share socially. The videos are organised into different categories, making searching easy, and new content will be added when available. The app points to video content held in YouTube, so all new content added to YouTube will automatically be added to the app.

Susanne Boyle, Senior Manager Learning, Teaching and Professional Skills, Mimas, said: "The Hairdressing Training service is a mature and highly valued Jisc service delivered by the team at Manchester. The launch of the Mobile App is another exciting development for this service in recent years and offers our users the benefits of flexible access, 24/7 with quality resources at their fingertips."

First for Jisc

As Hairdressing Training was the first Jisc service available via mobile devices (http://htmob.mobi/), the provision of the new app is another first - making the content even more accessible.

Lorraine Estelle, Jisc’s executive director digital resources and divisional CEO of Jisc Collections, said: “Jisc’s vision is to ensure that learners and teachers realise the benefits of mobile technology by delivering content onto any device, at anytime and anywhere. This app is an important step in realising this vision and improving the student experience.”

The development of the app by a mixed team at Mimas, (Louise Egan, Project Manager, Tom Hart, UX Designer and Ben Perry, Graphic Designer) came about when it became apparent that the innovative service could expand further by providing users with even easier routes to access content on the move - reaching and appealing to target audiences.

Siobhan Burke, OER service Manager, Mimas, said: “The new Hairdressing Training App is smart and stylish, offering convenience to teachers and students alike. The App confirms Jisc's commitment to pro-actively respond to the needs of its users by delivering services users want in the way that they want it.”

The app has been optimised for use on mobile devices only. A version for iPads and other handheld tablets may be looked at in the future, although the app can still be accessed and viewed via a device’s app store.
