Derby College student Tom Taylor-Dawes has been selected for the British Colleges' England Rugby squad and is now looking forward to a host of international matches.
Tom (18) from Burton-on-Trent and a former pupil at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, is studying Sport at Derby College in Pride Park and is a member of the College’s Rugby Development Centre – playing other Colleges throughout the UK.
Tom, who is captain of Derby Rugby Club’s Colts team, has played rugby since he was 11. He was put forward for regional trials by his College coach Kath Bates and made the final selection for the national squad at a training weekend at Warwick University.
He said: “It is a real honour to be chosen for the British Colleges' England squad and both my coaches at the College and at Derby Rugby Club where I first started playing are both extremely pleased.
“We have yet to get the fixtures through but I will hopefully be playing matches against the other home nations and then possibly teams from elsewhere in Europe such as Spain and Portugal.”
Kath Bates, who runs the Derby College Development Centre said: “Tom is a credit to the College and his club and has been assessed on a wide range of attributes such as his attitude and whether he is a team player as well as his ability on the pitch.
“The Rugby Development Centre has been going for four years and, although we have had students who have progressed well in the BCS process and even made it to professional rugby but this is the first time that we have had a student making the England squad.
“Credit for Tom’s playing ability really lies with his Derby Rugby Club coach Roxy Fearon and we are very proud that Tom is the only player from the East Midlands who has made it into the national college’s squad.”
Students from throughout the College play for the Rugby Development Centre which operates alongside a wide range of College sports teams ranging from men’s and women’s football to boxing.
