Stephen Lloyd MP recently visited Sussex Downs College together with head teachers from local Eastbourne schools to be briefed by college staff on the 14-16 Opt-in+ programme.
The programme is all about reengagement for pupils who for a broad range of reasons find it difficult to attend school and complete their studies. The partnership between the schools and the college is key to future success. Sarah Davies, Opt-in+ support worker outlined the weekly development programme for the young people.
Stephen Lloyd MP said: “I am really pleased to support Sussex Down’s Opt In Programme. It’s another good jobs initiative from our local college, and it’s a powerful illustration of just how committed Sussex Downs is to supporting young people who are struggling, and I share their commitment 100%.”
Sarah said: “Opt-in+ for young people in years 10 and 11 is an intensive personal development programme for those who are having trouble with poor behaviour in school. The small team works together to develop and practise a range of personal strategies to help cope with the challenges of school, both academically and socially. The aim is for young people to turn things around, achieve their GCSEs and progress positively in school, onto college or employment.
“Following the eight weeks programme we are developing a range of support mechanisms for the young person including peer support in the schools. In this way we can put in place safety frameworks that will help these young people succeed into the future.”
