CONEL held a Construction Business Breakfast at the Enfield Campus on Wednesday 24 February. The event welcomed organisations within the Construction industry to network, gather information on how the apprenticeship scheme works and to meet Construction Apprentices.
Construction Apprentices, prospective and existing employers attended the Business Breakfast. The employers, all with the common goal of workforce development, found out how they can partner and collaborate with CONEL and how their business could benefit from taking on apprentices. The attendees also had a tour of our Enfield site and the £2.2million purpose-built Construction centre that trains over 200 Construction students every year.
Head of Apprenticeships at CONEL, Sambit Sen (pictured) illustrated the rise in demand for apprentices: “The UK currently has over 500,000 apprentices and is set to have 3million new starts over the next 5 years. Apprentices are a great way to add to the workforce with lower overall training and recruitment costs.” Sambit also explained CONEL’s brand new Employer Recognition Scheme which identifies the different ways that employers are involved with the College, from employing Apprentices, to providing work experience and shaping the future of the workforce development.
The Business Breakfast was sponsored by the Conneely Group, one of the UK’s leading companies within the dry lining and façades business. The Conneely group is planning to recruit up to 40 apprentices by working in partnership with CONEL. It has plans to increase this to 100 over the next few years. Managing Director of the Connelly Group, John Cockerton said: “The successful partnership with CONEL has been beneficial to retain an effective workforce. Taking on apprentices from CONEL has helped the business grow. Many of the apprentices have progressed on to higher positions within the business.”
Jamie Holland, Independent Assessment Services Manager at City & Guilds gave a talk informing attendees on the new construction Trailblazer, Apprenticeship standards and employer routed funding. Employers found especially helpful the information Jamie gave regarding the changes taking place to construction apprentices trailblazers and the Apprenticeship Levy that comes in to effect in April 2017.
Richard Gaisey, Construction Apprentice at CONEL presented at the event stating: “The best thing about my apprenticeship with CONEL was the personal interaction with staff, as they were friendly and encouraging. I have learnt about construction and I have improved my team working skills in order to create a great masterpiece.” Richard who plans to be a Site Manager in the future enjoyed meeting new people and gaining new skills.
A future vision at CONEL is to create peer network groups for each sector to draw on employers’ expertise, industry knowledge and to share best practice. Together we will create a robust provision of training, employability and apprenticeship recruitment.
