City of Sunderland College tutor secures the first BALTIC Artist Teacher Award

A lecturer from City of Sunderland College is celebrating with ‘artistic flare’ after being awarded the first ever BALTIC Artist Teacher Award.
It was a case of ‘lights, camera, action!’ as College tutor, Lisa Lodge, 34, from Seaburn, wowed the judging panel at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead with her debut film entitled To Be Continued.

The award is part of the Artist Teacher Scheme (ATS), a national programme of professional development for teachers. The scheme forms part of Lisa’s MA studies in Fine Art and Education and is delivered in conjunction with the BALTIC and Northumbria University.

During a special exhibition, students enrolled on the MA course had the opportunity to display their work at BALTIC to be in with a chance of scooping the top accolade.

Lisa used her artistic skills to ‘brush up’ on her family history and worked for over a year to create the film. As part of the process, she gathered together family members to film their reactions to a box of old photographs, many of which hadn’t been seen in over thirty years.

Raw emotion and good use of photography caught the eye of BALTIC Director, Godfrey Worsdale, as the film re-visited poignant childhood memories of family outings and holidays together.

Lisa said: “I was astonished to find out that I had won, I really enjoyed working on the project as I had the chance to look back into my own family history which was really interesting.
“I am delighted that my art work will now be displayed at the BALTIC throughout November. I’d like to thank everyone involved with the Artist Teacher Scheme and my colleagues at City of Sunderland College for their support and advice.”

Mike Ryans, Head of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at City of Sunderland College, said: “We are delighted for Lisa, she is an excellent lecturer and we are all extremely proud that she has won the Artist Teacher Award. It reflects her hard work and her natural artistic ability.

“Here at City of Sunderland College we pride ourselves on bringing the best out of our students and Lisa has succeeded here by showing that it’s not just our students who are reaching for new heights, but the staff as well!”

To be continued, opens at the BATLIC on 4 November and will be displayed until the end of the month.
