Cardiff and Vale College launches and encourages everyone to get involved

On August 1st 2011Barry College and Coleg Glan Hafren became Cardiff and Vale College / Coleg Caerdydd a’r Fro, one of the largest and most exciting Further Education (FE) colleges in   the country. With thousands of students now enrolled as the first Cardiff and Vale College students, this week the College is holding an official launch week.

Between Monday 17th to Friday 21st October the College is holding a week of activities to further introduce the new College to everyone.  The week will culminate in an official launch event in Cardiff Bay, with Jeff Cuthbert AM Deputy Minister for Skills.

Cardiff and Vale College is now one of the largest colleges in the country. During the year 25,000 students will learn with the College including 4,000 on full-time courses, 1,400 school pupils aged between 14-18 taking a college course whilst at school, 1,500 people on apprenticeships across a huge range of industries and around 16,000 adults studying on a part-time basis.

The staff of 1000 industry experts, subject specialists and support teams work across 11 sites, including Trowbridge in the East of Cardiff, The Parade and City Road in Cardiff city centre, two Cardiff Bay sites: Cardiff Construction Training Centre and Cardiff Bay Creative Centre (the newest site), and in Barry:  Colcot Road, Barry Waterfront and ICAT in Rhoose.

The launch week kicks off with a roadshow for the College’s students on Monday and Tuesday.

During this roadshow the College team will visit different sites across Cardiff and the Vale and ask students to say what being part of Cardiff and Vale College means to them – with freebies and a prize draw on offer.

Later in the week, the College’s new exhibition vehicle travels into the community visiting Queen Street Cardiff on Wednesday and Kings Square Barry on Thursday. At these locations you can visit the vehicle to find out more about the College and how you can become a part of it. You can pick up the brand new brochure of courses on offer and find out about the first College Open Week. The Open Week, commencing on the 31st October, sees the College open up its sites for those who are considering applying to learn at the College.

The week culminates in an official launch breakfast event at St David’s Hotel and Spa – a location chosen as it sits on the border of and overlooks both Cardiff and the Vale. At this event, staff and students from the College will be demonstrating the latest industry techniques and technologies, including a hybrid vehicle, solar panels, enzymes in food production, hot stone massage, construction skills, sport and fitness testing and hospitality service skills. Guests from the Welsh Government, Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan councils, university and schools heads, business and industry and community representatives from across the region will be attending, along with Jeff Cuthbert AM, the Deputy Minister for Skills at the Welsh Government, who will speak at the event to formally launch Cardiff and Vale College. This is followed by an event for staff to get to know their college better, with professional development activities.

During the week there is also further activity including features in the local press, mailings to businesses and employers across the region, as well as personalised invitations to young people encouraging all to learn more about the new college.

Mike James, the Principal and Chief Executive of Cardiff and Vale College since 1st September 2011 said, “During this week we aim to encourage everyone in Cardiff and the Vale to find out more about the new college for this capital region.  We will also set out a promise with our vision to be ‘Inspiring, Inclusive and Influential’. The college’s promise is to be a new kind of college – a true centre point for individuals, employers and communities in Cardiff and the Vale. Many people will have already had information about the merger and will have seen the cosmetic changes to the College through new signs, but there is already plenty of progress behind the scenes. Cardiff and Vale College has a huge amount to offer this area and a huge drive to do so. The launch week is our chance to spread this word and involve people in our plans to transform the region.”

Jeff Cuthbert AM, Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Skills said, “I warmly welcome the creation of Cardiff and Vale College and am sure it will prove to be a great success. This is an excellent example of the Welsh Government's Transformation Agenda in action. Two strong and high-performing institutions have recognised the opportunity to become even stronger and deliver more to learners by coming together.

"Transformation is an ambitious agenda that has challenged colleges, schools, universities and other providers of learning across Wales to come forward with bold, imaginative initiatives that will achieve better use of resources and a far greater return from the nation's investment in education.

"This exciting new institution will prove to be another step forward for Wales' ambition to develop a world class education system."
