Cardiff and Vale College becomes incorporated and launches new logo

In August 2011, Barry College and Coleg Glan Hafren will merge to create Cardiff and Vale College or Coleg Caerdydd a’r Fro, one of the largest and most exciting further education (FE) colleges in the country. The creation of the new college, with a vision of being ‘Inspirational. Inclusive. Influential.’, is now rapidly gathering momentum, with Cardiff and Vale College becoming fully incorporated.

 

With this step the new Board of Governors for Cardiff and Vale College has been given full legal powers and is presiding over the development of this innovative new College.

 

This week saw the Vice Chair and Chair of the Board, Jacquie Turnbull and Geraint Evans respectively, along with students from both Barry College and Coleg Glan Hafren, celebrate this milestone with the launch of the Cardiff and Vale College logo.

 

In January, the Cardiff and Vale College Shadow Board took shape, with five governors from each College continuing to the Shadow Board, together with two representatives from the local authorities of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, plus the appointment of three new members. Having now gained official legal powers, with the recent incorporation of Cardiff and Vale College, the Shadow Board has become the first full Governing Body of the College.

 

These are the members of the Cardiff and Vale College Board of Governors:

• Mark Baird has been Director of Information and Technology in the Welsh Health Common Services Authority and has contributed to the National IM&T Strategy and its execution. He is currently a JP at Cardiff Magistrates and is a Board member at Powys Local Health Board
•  Vivienne Compton was previously a Director and Company Secretary of an education charity and social enterprise in South Wales, holds a masters degree in FE management and is currently Employer Engagement Manager for an Ofsted designated ‘Outstanding’ FE provider in the South West of England holding 11 Beacon Awards
•  David Crompton OBE has served on Barry College’s Governing Body since 2003 and before retiring was responsible for community development and engineering for Cardiff Bay Development Corporation
• Peter Dolan has built up 28 years of experience with IBM, in positions including General Management and Business Development. Peter is a member of the Aneurin Bevan Community Health Council and chairs the IT Steering Committee of The Board of Community Health Councils in Wales
• Geraint Evans MBE has spent 25 years in retail as a lawyer and is now the Managing Director of a commercial property company, as well as being the Chair of Business in Focus, Vice Chair of the Barry College Corporation and now Chair of Cardiff and Vale College 
• Bart Haines has spent 25 years working outside the UK, based in Brussels and the USA with Dow Corning, becoming European Vice President and UK Managing Director. His public sector service includes more than a decade as a governor of Barry College and the Chairmanship of the South East Wales Training & Enterprise Council   
• Councillor Tony Hampton is Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Chairman of WJEC Board of Directors (incorporating National Youth Orchestra for Wales and the National Youth Theatre for Wales), a Director of Careers Wales and has served on Barry College’s Board for twelve years   
• Professor Peter Hodson spent 10 years working for ICL, working on Operating Systems for mainframe computers and 27 years at University of Glamorgan, retiring as Dean of Faculty of Advanced Technology (Technology/Engineering) in 2008  
• Michael Howells has 18 years Headship in two Voluntary Aided Comprehensive Schools, including four years as Head of a Grant Maintained School and has also been Governor to Barry College and Clerk to Governing Body at St David’s Catholic College. Michael was a union officer for SHA Cymru (now Assoc. of School and College Leaders Cymru) for ten years  
• Philippa John-Cooke has worked in the Schools, FE and HE sectors in the UK and abroad and since 1991 has held numerous positions within Cardiff Council’s Education, Lifelong Learning and Economic Development departments. Latterly she has worked with The Open University Wales, with responsibility for Partnerships and Collaboration   
• David Reeves has worked for Ford, Black and Decker and GEC Hotpoint and managed three manufacturing companies. David is a past-president of Cardiff Bay Rotary Club, has been a Parent Governor in Primary and Secondary Education and a Governor in Coleg Glan Hafren for five years  
• Councillor Freda Salway has worked in education for the former South Glamorgan Council, is a Cardiff Councillor of 24 years, and is currently Executive Member for Schools and Lifelong Learning. She has also served on the boards of WJEC, Coleg Glan Hafren and ProMo-Cymru  
• David Smith has extensive Estates, Facilities, and Engineering Management experience with a number of multinational companies before setting up the Estates Department at Coleg Glan Hafren after Incorporation, managing capital projects and serving as a Governor at the College
• David Swallow is a Chartered Surveyor with 30 years experience, has worked with the WDA and Welsh Assembly Government, and currently works for Eversheds LLP, specialising in securing public funding for public and private sector clients and advising on public-private partnerships  
• Jacquie Turnbull MBE has secondary teaching and HE lecturing experience, is an author of two books for educators, is a retired JP, was formerly Council Member and Deputy Chair of General Teaching Council for Wales, Chair of Coleg Glan Hafren Corporation and now Joint Chair of Cardiff and Vale College.

 

With the governing body in place, the first Principal of Cardiff and Vale College was appointed last month and will be announced soon. The Principal and Board of Governors will lead the development of the new College, implementing the vision of being an ‘Inspirational. Inclusive. Influential.’ College.

 

Today students from Coleg Glan Hafren and Barry College launched the Cardiff and Vale College logo, with the Vice Chair and Chair of Governors. The logo for Cardiff and Vale College was chosen through a two stage consultation process, which ran during February and March. The process, involving staff, students, Governors and key partners, attracted 630 online votes and the involvement of 300 people in focus groups. The Governors then decided to choose the most popular logo, with 37% of the votes.

 

A website and brochure for the new College will be launched in the next few weeks. These will contain facts about Cardiff and Vale College; the benefits to young people, adults, employers, staff and partners; a list of the College sites and questions and answers on the merger process. Copies will be available at both Colleges and will be used alongside the existing College prospectuses and websites, until after enrolment in September.

 

Jacquie Turnbull and Geraint Evans, Vice Chair and Chair of the Cardiff and Vale College Governing Body, said in a joint statement, “A great deal of hard work has gone into taking Cardiff and Vale College this far, while maintaining the high standards of teaching and governance of both Colleges. The board is in place, the vision established, the Principal appointed and Governors and staff across both colleges are working together to ensure Cardiff and Vale College is ready for 1^st August. There will soon be plenty of information available to help learners, employers, partners and staff get excited about the new college and the benefits and opportunities it will bring to them and the region.”

 

Applications for both colleges will continue to be processed as usual from now to Summer 2011. Anyone who is currently on a course, has applied for a course, or secured a place on a course, at either Barry College or Coleg Glan Hafren will not be affected.
