With scissors at the ready and makeup on their brushes, Coleg Gwent students are getting set to compete in the first round of the 2011 AHT (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) UK Trainee Competition.
This year’s event will be held at Newport Centre where students will battle it out in the regional heats for a place in the national AHT final.
This first round of the competition will take place on Monday 31 January from 10am. Students from Wales and the South West will compete in 13 different categories. For the hair, categories include Ladies Evening Style, Men’s Commercial Cut and Finish and Ladies Long Hair. The beauty categories include Nail Art, Face and Body painting, as well as Catwalk and Masquerade Ball themed makeup.
Hoping to secure a place in the national final are around 80 Coleg Gwent competitors from the College’s Crosskeys and City of Newport Campuses, who will have plenty of support from students helping out behind the scenes. “Even if students are not competing, they all have responsibilities on the day,” said Hair & Beauty Lecturer Rachel Matthews. “It’ll be fantastic experience and a chance to practice their skills in an exciting environment.”
As well as students from hair and makeup, budding theatrical makeup artists from Crosskeys Campus will also be taking part in a range of hairdressing, make up, face painting, body painting, nail art competitions and a team event.
For the first time in its 25 year history, the competition venue has moved from one of the competing colleges to Newport Centre, due to a very large number of entrants.
Seeing the event go from strength to strength each year is Chairman of the AHT (Wales Area) David Bassett. He said: “The AHT is an organisation that works with colleges and training centres to set and improve standards of training within the industry of hair, beauty and holistics. We are delighted to have so many entries this year, and hope that the public will attend this event and support the students. Winners of the regional heats will go forward to the national finals and we wish all students every success.”
Tickets to the event which takes place from 10am-5pm on Monday 31 January 2011 will be available to the public on the door at the Newport Centre and cost £5.
The winners from this regional round will win a medal and certificate along with a place in the National Finals in Blackpool on 13 & 14 March 2011.
