Boxers are building on their careers Barry College – by coincidence, five Welsh Champions have enrolled on courses at its Cardiff Construction Training Centre (CCTC).
All five amateur boxers have worn the coveted Welsh Champions vest. They are all members of different clubs in Cardiff but as yet none of them have had to compete against one another because of the difference in weight categories.
The connection with champion boxers does not end there - Construction Lecturer Bill Reynolds is also a coach at one of the most successful clubs in Wales. In recent times his club, St. Josephs Newport, has boasted no fewer than 12 Welsh Champions, five British Champions and one European Gold medallist.
Bill said: “These students are required to balance a strict training schedule with their current studies which requires an extraordinary amount of dedication. I am sure that if they can maintain their current level of diligence the rewards will be worth all the hard work and sacrifice.
“All of the boxers are aware that the current goal is the 2010 Commonwealth Games but to be selected they must again win Welsh titles, definitely not an easy feat.”
